Foreword

It is interesting and very humbling to note that our birds, whom we have loved and have sometimes lost to death, have become so very interesting and important to our readers.  There are many lessons to be learned from our birds.  These are lessons which were cleverly disguised as opportunities to rescue, nurse, and love some of these birds whom were considered of little or no worth by pet store managers, avian breeders and by several individuals.

One such true and contemporary story revolves around our "Shy Girl," a cute little Peach-Cheeked Love Bird, and her lady friend, "Miss Azure," who is sitting on infertile eggs. The two cannot mate, because they are two different species of birds. We just found out on Tuesday, 5/5/2010 that "Shy Guy" is a GIRL. Azure nests in the lower, back, right corner of their cage, and "Shy Girl" feeds her, protects her and covers Azure's body with Shy Girls's wings and her chest to keep Azure warm! I cannot get close enough with my camera to take an exact picture without frightening "Shy Girl" and 'Miss Azure," so the picture at the top of this page is the best that I can produce. This is one of the many stories of our birds...

Because many of our birds whose stories we are telling have died, I will attempt so far as it is possbile to describe each bird and to assimilate or to reproduce as closely as possible, a picture of each deceased bird.  I wil attempt this by downoading the pictures of one of our live birds and which pictures most closely resemble the plumage of the deceased bird under discussion. I have also commissioned a local artist and friend who will draw a picture of each deceased bird. Together, the drawing and/or the picture will serve to illustrate each bird.

That which started several years ago as a series of articles entitled, "Bird Stories," and Raising Birds" Chapters 1 and 2, and finally, "B.I.R.D.S." have now become the beginnings and bases for this book.  And for this privilege, of sharing our birds' stories, Jeanne and I thank you!

Jeanne and Randy Faulk, Co-Authors.

Miss Buddy:

Purchased: 1987 from a Walmart for $9.00. A dark gray plumed Parakeet. Hen. Died 7-31-1999.

I did not know Jeanne nor her parakeet, Miss Buddy, at the time that Jeanne bought Miss Buddy from a Walmart for $9.00.  As a matter of fact, Jeanne thought that Buddy was a male at the time that Jeanne bought Buddy and continued to think that Buddy was a male up to the very day that I saw the bird.

Mr. Jinxie I:

Purchased 6/3/1996 Hatched: Date is
Unknown. A Cobalt-Blue, Clear Wing
English Budgerigar. Cock. Died 3/6/97.

We purchased Jinxie I from Judy, because we wanted a mate for Jeanne's "Miss Buddy."  Jinxie I was called a "Clear Wing," because his wings were "opaque" or "milky white" in color, and his body was a dark cobalt blue. They mated, and Miss Buddy laid eight eggs, four of which hatched.

He was a good daddy and fed Miss Buddy, so that she could feed his
babies. He left behind a lineage which has gone to the 5th generation. He died on 3/6/1997 of what we believe was old age, since Judy told us that he was a known breeder.

Bud: Their First-Hatched Offspring

Hatched: 10/9/1996. A Cobalt-Blue American Budgerigar with Clear-Wings.
Cock. Date of Death is unknown.*

Bud was Miss Buddie's and Jinxie I's first offspring, and looked just like his father, Jinxie I. We loaned him out to Judy for breeding purposes. We drove out to Canyon Lake, Texas to see him and his mate. He was feeding his mate, who had laid eggs in her nest box.

*That was the last time that we saw Bud who was named after Jeanne's father. Judy sold all of her birds, and Bud was taken as well, so we never found out what happened to him or to his mate and their offspring.

There is a cute story surrounding Bud's name. Jeanne told her father that she had named the first born male after him. When Bud asked her what the bird's name was, Jeanne told her father  that she named the bird Wilbur Kenneth Rennecker, a name which Bud absolutely hates, especially his middle name. Bud came out of his chair like he was shot out of a cannon!  Jeanne started laughing and said that she only named the bird, "Bud"!

Miss Lucy:

Hatched:10/9/1996. An albino-white American Budgerigar. Hen. Died 4/13/1999.

I always thought that Miss Lucy, named after my mother, Lucille, was hatched after Miss Marie, but my records say otherwise. Albinos lack any kind of pigmentation. Their feathers are white; their feet are pink, and their eyes appear to be red, because what you are seeing are the blood vessels in the retina of their eyes.

Albinos seldom live very long, due to, perhaps, a compromised immune system. Miss Lucy only lived about 2.5 years. We bought her a mate named Wren II, and she laid several eggs. Two of her eggs hatched, and both were female American Budgies, whom we named Smokee who hatched on 7/4/1999, and Pepper who hatched on
7/6/1999.

Miss Lucy was a very spirited bird who loved to get into a fight. Many were the times that either Jeanne or I had to break up a fight which Miss Lucy orchestrated! We unofficially named her "THE ORIGINAL 'SNIT BIRD'," a name which she rightly earned, and richly deserved. She died on 4/13/2000.

Miss Marie:

Hatched: 10/11/1996. Our 2nd Albino-White American Budgerigar. Hen. Died
10/29/1999.

Marie was our 3rd bird to hatch and our 2nd Albino-White Hen.  Albinoism is a recessive trait and requires that the Mother and the Father bird also have the recessive trait. Marie was named for Jeanne's mother and was a very sweet natured bird, just like her mother Buddy. We bought Dana Brent to be Marie's mate. (See Dana Brent's story below.) Marie laid four eggs, all of which hatched. We now have the 5th generation from Miss Buddy and Jinxie I and the 4th generation from Miss Marie and Dana Brent.

Marie's older sister, Lucy, got into a fight with Marie and Lucy was responsible for Marie's early death. Marie died on 10/29/1999.

The Wren Bird

Hatched: 10/21/1996, A green and yellow American Budgerigar. Cock. Died 8/10/1997.

Wren I was the very last to hatch. There were 4 eggs between Miss Marie, who hatched on 10/11/1996, and Wren I who hatched on 10/21/1996. According to my records, the three of the babies died within a day or two and the last one only lived 2 days. We named them Skippy, Scooter, Little Bits I and Rho Faulk, and then we buried them.

Wren I was an unusual bird in many ways.  Bud looked like his father. Lucy and Marie were Albino-Whites and then there was this green and yellow bird. We have no idea what the four birds between Marie and Wren I would have looked like, since newly hatched parakeets, English Budgerigars and the American Budgerigar Hybrid are featherless when they hatch and do not start to grow feathers for about 10 days after they hatch.

Wren I was our "clown bird."  One day he seemed to have just dissappeared. Jeanne and I looked all over the house for him, and it was only when we heard him cheep, and we looked up on the curtain rod, and found him! He had climbed up the entire seven foot curtain, which reached from the curtain rod to the floor, and he perched on the curtain road and cheeping as if to say, "Look at me. I'm the King of the Bird World!"

He continued to climb the curtain and perch on the curtain rod almost until the day he died. He was the very first one of our birds to develop "tumors,"
which caused him to develop awful "tremors."  He would twist his head around and just "quiver!" We took him to a veterinarian, but there was nothing that could be done for him. This was before we learned about "Systemajuv" and the other herbal remedies, which we believe would have saved his life. We came home from Church and found him dead on the bottom of his cage. There will never be another Wren I, although we named another bird, Wren II in his honor. He only lived about 10 months, but he brought us great joy.

He died 8/10/1997.

Dana Brent:

Purchased: 1/20/1998.  Hatched:
Date Unknown. Cock.  Dark Purple Plumed American Budgerigar with Black and White Wind Feathers. Died 12/18/2009.

We purchased Dana Brent from Louis and Judy as a mate for our 2nd Albino White Female American Budgerigar, Miss Marie. Jeanne named Dana Brent after a very close friend and our former Bishop, C. Brent Burnham. As Jeanne says so very often, you know that you have "arrived" when we name a bird after you!  Marie laid five eggs all of which hatched.

Periwinkle I hatched 3/3/1999, but  he died of unknown causes six days later, on 3/9/1999. He was the first and only bird in Dana Brent and Marie's first clutch of eggs.

Carrie hatched on 7/10/1999 as the first of four eggs in Dana Brent's and Marie's second clutch of eggs. We gave her to one of my co-workers as a pet for her children.  We have never sold any of our birds, but we will give them away to a good home.

Candi hatched on 7/11/1999 and looked just like his grandmother, Miss Buddy. He died of natural causes on 12/6/2006.

Carlie hatched on 7/16/1999 and was a lighter shade of purple. We loaned her and her father, Dana Brent, to a friend of ours who wanted to introduce purple into her birds' blood line.  Carlie was most assuredly Jeanne's bird.  She died of respiratory problems on 5/11/2001.

And then, there was Periwinkle II, our "Clown Bird". He hatched on 7/21/1999, after the egg in which he was enclosed was used for a "pillow" by his siblings for about 11 days. We thought that he would never hatch.  He died of tumors on 1/9/2005.

We will write more on each bird individually later.

Dana Brent lived a very useful life.  As he got older, he gradually became blind and was first guarded, fed and groomed by Jared, until Jared died. He was guarded, fed and groomed during the last year of his life by "Babs," whom we thought was a girl, but we found out later was a male, whose name we changed to "Pooh Babs" and finally to "Pooh Bear".  Dana Brent died on 12/18/2009.

Wren II

Hatched: Date Unknown. Estimated date of hatching was mid August or early September of 1997. A pastel yellow, pastel tourquoise and black Parakeet. Cock. Purchased 10/1/1997 to save from being thrown to the cats for cat food, due to his broken wing, discovered when he came out of the nest box. Died 10/19/2000.

Wren II was, by all appearances, the very first bird whom we rescued from becoming eaten alive by Louis and Judy's cats. I had always thought that Mandy Jeanne was our first rescue venture. When Wren II, named after our first Wren bird, came out of the nest box, his wing was broken and drooping. We bought him and brought him home so that Jeanne could mend his broken wing. His plumage was so very beautiful that he was a delight to see. To give you an idea what he looked like, I am enclosing picutures of "Azure," another one of our parakeets.

Wren II was the mate to the first of our Albino White Female Parakeets, "Miss Lucy".  Lucy laid several eggs, two of which hatched: "Miss Smokey" on 7/4/1999 and "Miss Pepper" on 7-6-1997. He lived a very useful life, and died on 10/19/2000.

Calli I

Hatched: Date Unknown. Purchased 11/3/1996. White American Budgie with Black Eyes. Cock. Died 11/3/97.

There is not much that I can say about Calli I, other than to say we bought him from Louis and Judy on 11/3/96.
He broke his neck. We found him dead on the floor below his cage. He died 11/3/97.

Jeanne and I named a very special little female parakeet, Calli II, after him.

Jinxie II

Hatched: Date Unknown, but he was a much older bird who had been a known breeder & had outlived his usefulness.
A Cobalt-Blue Clear Wing American Budgerigar. Cock. Died 9/26/2002 at the approximate age of 12 years.

Jeanne and I purchased Jinxie II from Louis and Judy who would have otherwise thrown him to the cats, because he was no longer useful as a breeder.  He was the first of three birds that we bought that day. Because he looked so much like Jinxie I, we named him in honor of Jinxie I, who died 3/6/1997. Jinxie II died 9/26/2002.

Jared

Hatched: Date Unknown. Purchased 10/1/1997. A dark gray American Budgerigar. Cock. Died 11/13/2007.

Jared was a vey special bird, named for the Brother of Jared in the Book of Mormon. He was a very gentle bird and never bothered anyone. The one trait he had was shredding his feathers. We never understood why he did this, but toward the end of his life, he quit this practice.

He was a good friend to our Dana Brent, who was going blind. Jared fed Dana Brent, groomed him and helped Dana Brent get around. Wherever we saw Dana Brent, we saw Jared. Jared developed some sores or cysts on his toes, and we took him to our veterinarian for treatment, but the cysts keep returning. We tried to lance them, but then we could not stop the bleeding. Jared went into shock and died in our hands. I think that the trauma, the pain, the bleeding and especially his considerable age took its toll. We had him for 10 years, and we do not know how old he was when we bought him. Jeanne and I loved him very much and still miss him.

He died 11/13/2007.

Percy Arthur I

Hatched: Date Unknown. Purchased 10/1/1997. Abino White American Budgerigar. Cock. Died 2/27/1998.

Albino White Cocks are rare. Usually Albino Whites are hens. Our Lucy, our Marie, our JudiLynn were Albino Whites, and most recently, our Anne Marie, the 5th generation from our original "Miss Buddy" is an Albino White Hen. I have only had one other Albino White Cock, which I named "Cari,"a hansome little parakeet, and he only lived two weeks after I purchased him from Forever Pets on 1/15/1998. Cari died of seizures 14 days later on 1/28/1998.

Jeanne named our first Albino White Cock "Percy Arthur" after Jeanne's paternal grandfather and was very proud of our bird. But Albino Whites, we have come to discover, have an apparent immune deficiency which is genetic, and do not not live as long as other birds. This is especially true of the males, who like Percy Arthur who only lived a little less than 5 months, and Cari who only lived 2 weeks.

Percy Arthur died 2/27/1998.

JudiLynn

Hatched: Date Unknown. Purchased 1/20/1998. Albino White Parakeet. Hen. Died 2/17/2002.

We purchased JudiLynn from Judy and Louis, and we figured that this pretty Albino White Parakeet Hen was a young bird. She was named after Judy Baker and like her namesake, JudiLynn had a mind of her own. She was high strung and high spirited.

We almost lost her to a prolapsed uterus, caused by laying eggs. We took her across town to Dr. Hill in Kirby, TX. because Dr. McGeHee was unavailable.
Dr. Hill stitched her "vent," otherwise known as her rectum and saved her life. Even though Albinos do not live very long, JudiLynn lived with us for 4 years before she died on 2/17/2002.

Don Mario

Hatched: Date Unknown. Purchased 2/28/1998. Blue and Lavender Parakeet. Cock. Died: Unknown.

We purchased Don Mario from Judy and Louis Baker on 1/28/1998. I do not remember much about him, other than that he was a beautiful blue and lavender parakeet, whom we gave to the Alamo Exhibition Bird Club on 9/26/1998.

Miss Calli

Hatched: Date Unknown. Purchased 10/1/1997. Parakeet with white feathers and black eyes. Hen. Died 5/29/2001.

We purchased this pretty little female parakeet from Judy and Louis Baker on 10/1/1997, and she became one of my favorites.  The white line, with black eyes, like the albinos with red eyes, are derived from the blue line, but both parents must have the gene.  Miss Calli charmed me from the very first and would allow me to pick her up without quarreling.

Like the albino whites, Calli's immune system was weak, but she lived 4 almost 5 years. The night that she died, her body tried to hold onto her spirit and refused to let her spirit go. I gave her a blessing that her spirit might break free of her diseased body, and she finally died in my hands. I was very sorry to see her go, but I knew that it was best for her not to suffer any more. I truly loved my little white feathered friend with her black eyes!

Miss Calli died 5/29/2001.

Curtis

Hatched: Date Unknown. Purchased 1/27/1998. Turquoise Parakeet. Cock.
Died: Date Unknown.

We purchased Curtis from Ruth Bova on 1/27/1998. He was a beautiful turquoise parakeet which we later donated to the Alamo Exhibition Bird Club on 9/26/1998. Date of Death is unknown.

Kathy Jean "Trash Can" Murray

Hatched: Date Unknown. Purchased 1/27/1998. Pastel Turquoise Parakeet.
Cock. Died 7/24/2000.

We purchased Murray from Ruth Bova on 1/27/1998, the same day that we bought Curtis. Murray was named in honor of USAF Major Kathy Jean Murray, who was Jeanne's supervisor at wilford Hall Medical Center, when Jeanne was a Civil Service Obstetric R.N. Jeanne and Major Murray were the best of friends, so it was only natural that Jeanne would name a bird after Major Murray. He was a beautiful pastel turqouise parakeet with a sweet dispositon.

One day he vanished, and we spent over an hour searching for him. I just happened to look inside Jeanne's sewing room and heard a sound coming from inside of Jeanne's sewing room trash can, located just inside her sewing room door. AND THERE WAS MURRAY!  So from that day until the day that he died, he acquired the nickname of "TRASH CAN MURRAY!"

He took care of Miss Buddy when she was too old and feeble to move from the bottom of the cage. He fed her, groomed her and protected her until she died on 7/31/1999. Like his name sake, he was a care giver, for which he will forever hold a special place in Jeanne's and my memories and in our hearts.

He died almost a year later, on 7/24/2000.

Amy Jean Faulk

Hatched: Date Unknown. Purchased 2/2/1998. /White Parakeet with Blue and Black Spots. Cock. Died: Date Unknown.

Although Amy Jean Faulk was a male parakeet, he was named for a special LDS Sister Missionary who was one of three Sister Missionaries who taught Jeanne the Gospel around the first week of May of 1994. We bought him from "Forever Pets" in Leon Valley, Texas on 2/2/1998. He was a beautiful bird which we later donated to the Alamo Exhibition Bird Club on 9/25/1998. Date of Death is unknown.
