Foreword

It is interesting and very humbling to note that our birds, whom we have loved and have sometimes lost to death, have become so very interesting and important to our readers.  There are many lessons to be learned from our birds.  These are lessons which were cleverly disguised as opportunities to rescue, nurse, and love some of these birds whom were considered of little or no worth by pet store managers, avian breeders and by several individuals.

One such true and contemporary story revolves around our "Shy Guy," a cute little Peach-Cheeked Love Bird, and his lady friend, "Miss Azure," who is sitting on infertile eggs. The two cannot mate, because they are two different species of birds. She nests in the lower, back, right corner of their cage, and "Shy Guy" feeds her, protects her and covers her body with his wings and his chest to keep her warm! I cannot get close enough with my camera to take an exact picture without frightening "Shy Guy" and 'Miss Azure," so the picture at the top of this page is the best that I can produce. This is one of the many stories of our birds...

Because many of our birds whose stories we are telling have died, I will attempt so far as it is possbile to describe each bird and to assimilate or to reproduce as closely as possible, a picture of each deceased bird.  I wil attempt this by downoading the pictures of one of our live birds and which pictures most closely resemble the plumage of the deceased bird under discussion. I have also commissioned a local artist and friend who will draw a picture of each deceased bird. Together, the drawing and/or the picture will serve to illustrate each bird.

That which started several years ago as a series of articles entitled, "Bird Stories," and Raising Birds" Chapters 1 and 2, and finally, "B.I.R.D.S." have now become the beginnings and bases for this book.  And for this privilege, of sharing our birds' stories, Jeanne and I thank you!

Jeanne and Randy Faulk, Co-Authors.

Date Hatched: Date Unknown. Purchased 2/2/1998. Turquoise Parakeet. Hen. Died: Date Unknown.

We purchased this pretty turquoise female parakett from "Forever Pets," the very same day on which we purchased Amy Jean Faulk, the male parakeet, whose story is found at the bottom of the preceeding page.

We also donated Melody Faulk, who was named for my little sister, to the the Alamo Exhibition Bird Club on 9/26/1998.

Date of Death is unkonwn.

Cari Faulk

Hatched: Date Unknown. Purchased 1/15/1998. Albino White Parakeet. Cock. Died 1/29/1998.

I bought this cute litte Albino White Male Parakeet from "Forever Pets" on 1/25/1998. Albino White males are very rare, since most Albino Whites are females. He quickly became Mandy Jean's close friend.

Much to my surprise, sorrow and dismay, he developed seizures, very similar to those suffered by Wren I. I took him to Dr. McGeHee, who injected a very strong anesthetic, and Cari died in my hands on 1/29/1998.

Blue Bird Faulk

Hatched: Date Unknown. Purchased 12/3/1994. Cobalt Blue Parakeet. Hen. Died 7/25/1996.

I purchased this pretty little Cobalt Blue Female Parakeet from Petland on 12/3/1994. She was so cute and loved being loved! She developed an intestinal obstruction and died 19 months after I bought her. She was one of the very few birds that I actually bought, and I was very saddened at her passing.

Date of Death: 7/25/1996.

We purchased Chad Faulk, whom Jeanne named after her Obstetric Physician friend, Dr. Chad Lunt, at Wilford Hall Medical Center. We purchaaed Chad Faulk from Judy Baker in Canyon Lake, Texas, about 65 miles from our home in North West San Antonio.

Chad Faulk was a beautiful Lavender Male American Budgerigar whom we donated to the Alamo Exhibition Bird Club on 9/26/1998.

Coriantum (Cory) Faulk

Hatched: Estimated to have been 8 weeks prior to purchase. Purchased 5/28/1998. Black and White American Budgie. Cock. Died 1/7/1999.

We purchased this cute little American Budgie Male from Judy Baker on 5/28/1998. Jeanne named him "Coriantum" from one of the many names found in The Book of Mormon, but she shortened his name to "Cory."

His tali and wing feathers were stunted or, in other words, they would not grow out properly. He had apparently fallen off the top of the cage and had broken his neck. We only had him about seven months when he died on 1/7/1999.

Jeanne and I purchased this pretty SilverWing Female Parakeet from Ruth Bova on 10/11/1998. Our American Budgie Male, Jared, took up with her almost immediately, and she was his mate, although she never laid any eggs. She died on 8/27/1998, but Jared was a widower until his death on 11/13/2007.

Periwinkle I

Hatched: 3/3/1999. Purchased: N/A.
Miss Marie's and Dana Brent's 1st Clutch. The Only Egg. American Budgie. Sex: Unknown. Color: Unknown. Died 3/9/1999.

This little bird died on unknown causes, but I suspect that it was due to my handling him too much! If this is indeed true, I hope that Periwinkle I forgives me!  Jeanne named Periwinkle II in honor of Periwinkle I.

Jaelynn Faulk

Hatched: Approximately mid-April, 1999. Purchased 5/31/1999. A Light-Aqua Marine American Budgie with Silver Wings. Hen. Date of Death: 3/31/2002.

We bought this pretty little American Budgie Hen from "Awanna Pets" on 5/31/1999. According to the Pet Store Manager, this little bird was hatched approximately 6 weeks before we bought her, but we know from experience that a lot of "Jobbers" buy a flock of baby birds which are only about four to five weeks of age. Most of these baby birds can barely just eat seed and should not be weaned from their mother bird until they are at least five to six weeks of age.

Jeanne and I have serious doubts about this little bird's being any more than four to five weeks of age.

She died a little less than three years of age at 3/31/2002.

Smokee Faulk

Hatched: 7/4/1999. Purchased: N/A.
White and Gray American Budgie. Looks like Jinxie I, her Maternal Grandfather. Hen. Date of Death: Unknown.

This little bird looked like her Maternal Grandfather, but acted really "Snitty," like her mother, Miss Lucy. That is to say, that she either inherited Miss Lucy's "Snitty" attitude or copied Miss Lucy's attitude. We traded her and her younger sister, Pepper Faulk, to Jose at "Perfect Pets" for our first real "English Budgerigar," Percy Arthur II. Date of Death is unknown.

Pepper Faulk

Hatched: 7/6/1999. Purchased: N/A.
Looks like Jinxie II, A Cobalt-Blue, Clear Wing American Budgie, buy as small as Wren II, a Parakeet. Hen. Date of Death: Unknown.

This little bird hatched from an egg laid by Lucy, an American Budgie Hen, but Pepper was smaller than the traditional American Budgie and resembled her father, Wren II who was a Parakeet. Pepper looked like Jinxie II, who was a Cobalt-Blue, Clear Wing, but there was no relation to Jinxie II as far as I can remember. We traded her and her older sister, Smokee, to Jose at "Perfect Pets" for our first real "English Budgerigar," Percy Arthur II, who was named by Jeanne after Jeanne's Maternal Grandfather, Percy Arthur, and also after Percy Arthur I.

Carlie Faulk

Hatched: 7/10/1999 P.M. Purchased: N/A. A Medium Violet American Budgie with White Neck and White Feathers. Hen. Died 5/11/2001.

Second only to "Miss Buddy," "Carlie Faulk" was Jeanne's favorite bird. This pretty Violet Bird was the 1st bird from Dana Brent's "Purple Line." We loaned her and her father, Dana Brent to Miss Melanie LeMay so that Melanie could develop her own "Purple Line." In return, Melanie gave us three of Miss Carilie's and her mate, Mr.Basil's five hatchlings, whom we named Darcie, Carswell and Jordan (Jordy, for short).

Miss Carlie only lived about 22 months and died in my hands on Sunday, 5/11/2001, while Jeanne was at work. It almost broke my heart to call Jeanne at work to tell her that her 2nd favorite bird, Miss Carlie, had died! But we still had Miss Carlie's and Mr. Basil's three babies, whom I will describe and whose stories I will tell later.

Periwinkle II

Hatched: 7/21/1999. Purchased: N/A.
Light Gray American Budgie. Cock. Died: 1/9/2005.

Periwinkle II was named in honor of Periwinkle I. He was the 4th of 4 eggs in Miss Marie's and Dana Brent's 2nd Clutch.

We thought that this egg would never hatch!  Miss Marie and the other 3 chicks walked all over this egg, and the chicks even used this egg as a pillow!

When he finally hatched on 7/21/1999, 14 days after Carrie hatched (7/7/99), 11 days after Carlie hatched (on the evening of 7/10/99), and 10 days after
Candi hatched (on the morning of 7/11/99), I yelled out to Jeanne, "We've got BIRD!"

Very soon, he also became known as "The Beggar Bird." Even after the normal time (4 to 5 weeks) that a chick is fed by the mother bird,
Perriwinkle II followed Miss Marie for about 4 more weeks to be fed by her, instead of only eating seed from the seed cups, like his older brothers, Carrie and Candi and his older sister Carlie.

Like his Uncle, Wren I, who was Miss Marie's younger brother, Periwinkle II was very much "The Clown Bird." He died on 1/9/2005.

Percy Arthur I

Hatched: Date Unknown. Purchased on 9/8/1999 as an even exchange for "Smokee" and "Pepper." A White English Budgerigar with 2 Black Spots and a Blue Belly. Date of Death: 3/31/2001.

Jeanne and I "Even" traded "Smokee" and "Pepper" to Mr. Jose Farias, the owner of "Perfect Pets" for our first English Budgerigar, whom Jeanne named Percy Arthur," after Jeanne's Maternal Grandfather and this beautiful English Budgerigar was a friend of another of our favorite birds, Jared, up until the day that Percy Arthur died on 3/3/2001, just one day before my 54th birthday. We would name another bird, Percy Arthur II, after Percy Arthur I in the future.

"Mister"

Hatched: Date Unknown. Purchaed on 11/30/1999. White American Budgie with Black and White Neck and Navy Blue Tail. Cock. Date of Death: Unknown.

Jeanne and I bought this handsome male American Budgie from Jose Farias at "Perfect Pets." He was the mate of a very beautiful bird, whom Jeanne named "Amani Onjanue" (whose story you can read now by clicking here!) He was the father of "Miss Teal" and "Cobalt." I put quotes around his name, because he was such a regal bird.

Jeanne and I gave him to Miss Melanie LeMay whom we saw at the Alamo Exhitbition Bird Club in late April of 1998, to sell and to keep the profits. He was somewhere around 28 months of age, because we had him for 26 months before we gave him to Melanie LeMay.
Date of Death: Unknown.

Mandy Ceil

Hatched: Approximately 10/20/1999. Purchased on 11/30/1999. Ceil Blue Parakeet with Black & White Neck and Navy Blue Tail. Hen. Date of Death: Unknown.

Jeanne and I purchased this prettly little bird, whom we named "Mandy Ceil" after our "Mandy Jeanne." We sometimes called Mandy Ceil "Blue Beauty" as well. We bought her from Jose Farias at "Perfect Pets" at the approximate age of 5 weeks of age. We gave her to Melissa Vasquez, one of my co-workers as a pet for her children. Date of Death: Unknown.

Amani Onjanue

Hatched: Date Unknown. Purchased on 1/4/2000 from "Perfect Pets." A beautiful White and Powder Blue with Yellow Wash Parakeet. Hen. Date of Death: 7/7/2003.

First of all, I probably need to expain what "Yellow Wash" means. It simply means that the bird has a bunch of light yellow colored feathers on the top of its head and down the back of its neck.

Jeanne bought this beautiful female parakeet from Jose Farias at "Perfect Pets" and named her "Amani Onjanue" after a baby which Jeanne helped to deliver at Wlford Hall Medical Center a few days before. Amani mated with Periwinkle II and on 5/16/2001 Amani produced a female baby bird whom Jeanne named "Houdini," because as soon as "Houdini" was old enough to eat seed and o come out of the nest box, "Houdini" would escape from the cage.

Within days after mating with Periwinkle II, Amani Onjanue mated with "Mister" and laid 2 eggs which hatched, and that is how we aquired "Teal" on 5/18/2001 and "Cobalt" on 5/20/2001. Amani was one of Jeanne's favorites, third only to "Miss Buddy" and to "Miss Carlie."  We had Amani for about 3 1/2 years before she died on 7/7/2003. I do not believe that there will ever be another bird as beautiful as Amani Onjanue. (To return to my story of "Mister," click here!)

Maddie Anne

Hatched: Date Unknown. Purchased 1/13/2000. A Light Lavender, Spangled Engish Budgerigar. Hen. Died 9/13/2000.

Jeanne bought this big, female English Budgerigar from Petco as a mate for our Percy Arthur II, but as far as we could tell, the two birds never mated. Mattie Anne was about 3 years old when we bought her. We loaned her out to Melanie LeMay in Lake Hills, TX. That would be the last time that we saw Maddie Anne, because she died at Melanie's home on 9/13/2000.

Kira "Fluff"

Hatched: 12/7/1999. Purchased on 2/4/2000. A Large English Budgerigar with a Teal Blue Chest and Black & White Neck. Cock. Date of Death: 8/9/2002.

Meline LeMay sold this large regal Engilsh Budgerigar to Jose Farias at "Perfect Pets." on 2/4/2000. When Jeanne and I drove to the pet store, the very first bird that Jeanne saw was this bird. Jose Farias gave us the name of the breeder, Meline Lemay, and her phone number in Lake Hills, Tx. This was the very first time that we communicate with Melinie, but it would most certainly not be the last. We became good friends and drove up to her home on numerous occasions to buy birds from her. Shortly after we bought Kira "Fluff," as Jeanne called him, we went back to the pet store and bought his little sister, "Keri-Mel" as well.

Kira "Fluff" was unquestionably Jeanne's bird, just as his sister, Kari-Mel was soon to be mine. We had him for about 20 months, before he died on 2/4/2000.

Kari-Mel

Hatched: 12/15/1999. Purchased on 2/25/2000. A large Gray-Green English Budgerigar with a Yellow Head. Hen. Date of Death: 11/21/2004.

After purchasing Kira "Fluff" from Jose Farias at "Perfect Pets," and calling Melinie LeMay from the pet store, Jeanne and I eagerly awaited the arrival of Melinie's next English Budgerigar to "Perfect Pets."  We were told that this beautiful English Budgerigar Hen was the younger sister of Kari-"Fluff," having hatched at Melinie LeMay's home on 2/25/2000.

We bought her at once, and brought her home to reunite with her older brother, Kira "Fluff" and to mingle with our flock. It didn't take very long for our Rho-Rho to claim her for his own!
They would never mate, because he could not mount her, but it was very obvious that they loved each other. Even thought his "physical challenge," a crippled leg, prevented him from mounting her, he would call to her. He was the only male for whom Kari-Mel would lay eggs, even though her eggs were infertile.

Have you noticed the similarity in Kira's name and in Kari's name? The letters are the same. The only difference is in the arrangement of the four letters. I have Jeanne to thank for that association. She is a brilliant woman, whom I love and admire very much!

We had Kari-Mel for a little less than 5 years. When Rho-Rho died on 4/10/2002, Kari-Mel grieved for at least 2 weeks. She refused to eat, and we were concerned that she would die from grief. A couple of years later, we segregated her and put her and "Periwinkle II" into a separate cage, so that he could feed her, groom her and care for her. She never laid eggs for Periwinkle II or for anyone else, after she had once laid eggs for Rho-Rho. She died on 11/21/2004. She was a special and very much loved bird, just like her brother, Kira "Fluff" and her mate, Rho-Rho. We miss all three of them terribly!

Lena "Pahlini"

Hatched: Approximately 7/1999. Purchased on 6/22/2000. A beautiful parakeet with a blue chest, a yellow face and blue & black wings. Hen. Date of Death: 12/24/2005.

Jeanne and I bought this beautiful and very "spunky" litte femaie parakeet from Melinie LeMay, who had named her "Pahlint," before we bought her. Jeanne gave Lena her unusual name, Lena "Pahlini," but I have no idea where Jeanne picked up this name. Lena was approximately 1 year old when we bought her, so I can only estimate that Lena's hatch date was around 7/1999.

Lena took up with "Gorgeous George" when we bought him on 3/7/2001, and she drove him "crazy" with her antics until the day she died on 12/24/2005.

Gorgeous George

Hatched:Approximately 1/31/2001. Purchased: 3/7/2001 from Melinie LeMay. A Teal Blue English Budgerigar with a White Head. Cock. Date of Death: 2/4/2008.

This English Budgerigar was almost killed by his mother, Miss Emma, a very large and ferocious female English Buderigar, who literally chewed a raw and very painful cancerous growth from her back. Her mate was our very own Dana Brent. "Gorgeous George" was not his first name. Due to Miss Emma's biting the feathers off of his top knot, which means the top of his head, Melinie LeMay called him the "Indian Head." In order to save his life, Melinie removed him from Miss Emma's grasp and placed him with Miss Carlie, Dana Brent's daughter, and Miss Carlie's mate, Mr. Basal, a very large Green and Yellow English Budgerigar. Both Miss Carlie and Mr. Basal fed and cared for the little "Indian Head" until he was old enough and large enought to eat seed and to take care of himself.

We bought him from Melinie, and Jeanne renamed him "Gorgeous George." He took up with Lena "Pahlini" or she took up with him. But whichever way it happened, they were mates, and she drove him crazy until she died on 12/24/2005. He died on 2/4/2008.

Jordan "Jordey" LeMay

Hatched: 10/22/2000. Purchased on 12/26/2000. A Green American Budgie with a Yellow Head. Cock. Date of Death: N/A.

When Jeanne and I loaned out Dana Brent and his daughter, Miss Carlie, to Melinie LeMay so that Melinie could develop her "Purple Line," we made an agreement that we would get 2 or 3 babies in return. Although we never made an agreement to buy the three babies, we still paid Melinie for each of Miss Carlie's three hatchlings. Miss Carlie mated with Mr. Basal, a very large green English Budgerigar with a yellow head and laid 2 clutches of eggs. Jordey was in the first clutch and hatched on 12/26/2000. Darcey and Carswell were in the second clutch and hatched around the middle of January of 2001. Melinie kept 2 of the 3 hatchlings from Carlie's first clutch and however many from Carlie's second clutch after we bought Darcey and Carswell. One of the three hatchlings in Miss Carlie's first clutch was Jordan "Jordey" LeMay, who was a smaller version of his father, the "Basal" Bird.

We have never seen Jordey show much interest in mating, although he travels from cage to cage. On occasions, he will feed our Imara, but that is the extent of his mating ritual. We have had him 9 years, and he shows no signs of slowing down.

Darcey

Hatched: Approximately Mid January of 2001. Purchased 3/7/2001. An English Budgie with a Cobalt Blue Body and a large "Pied" spot on the back of his head. Cock. Date of Death: 5/28/2005.

Darcey was the second of the three birds whom we bought from Melinie LeMay and whose parents were our Carlie and Melinie's Basal. Jordan "Jordey" was the first from Miss Cariie's first clutch, and their brother, Carswell, was the third and, like Darcey, Carswell was from Miss Carile's second clutch. When we brought these three brothers home from Melanie's house, we put them in the cages with our other birds. We got Miss Julie from Lucille Probst on 8/24/2002, and after removing her from her filthy cage and cleaning her up, Jenne cautiously put her into the last cage to rest. As soon as Darcey saw Miss Julie, he immediately began "courting" her and soon became her mate and her protector for the rest of his life.

Darcey was a "Pied," which meant that he had one white feather on the back of his cobalt blue neck. His "Pied" spot was larger than his brother Carswell's Pied spot. Both brothers, Darcey and Carswell were Cobalt Blue English Budgerigars, but Jeanne and I could tell them apart. Darcey was one of Jeanne's favorites and was a very good natured bird. He died of a heart attack in Jeanne's hands on 5/28/2005.

Carswell

Hatched: Approximately mid January of 2001. Purchased 3/7/2001. An English Budgerigar with a Cobalt Blue Body and a smaller "Pied" spot on the back of his head. Cock. Date of Death: 6/8/2007.

Carswell was the third of Miss Carlie's three birds whom we bought from Melinie LeMay, and one of the very few birds to whom I gave a name. Jeanne almost always named our birds.

It was very easy to distinguish Carswell from Darcey, other than the smaller "Pied" spot on the back of Carswell's head. Darcy was always with Miss Julie! After Darcy's death on 5/28/2005, Carswell took care of Miss Julie until her death on 10/19.2006. Carswell died from tumors and a heart attack on 6/8/2007.

Miss Julie

Hatched: Date Unknown. Approximately 1 year before we acquired her. Purchased: N/A. She was given to us on 8/24/2002 by Lucille Probst. A little White Parakeet with a Black and Teal Colored Belly. Hen. Date of Death: 10/19/2006.

Miss Julie was a very unloved and a very badly treated little bird, who was one of our B.I.R.D.S. listed on our B.I.R.D.S. page.When we got her from Lucille Probst, this little bird whom someone named "Juliette," had just recently lost her mate, "Romeo," to death. Her legs and feet were crooked, due to "Ricketts" which is a disease brought on by a lack of Vitamin D and other essential minerals. Her feathers were unsightly, and her cage was way too small for one bird, much less for two! It was filthy and her appearance was not much better.

Since she could not move very quickly to avoid injury, she soon learned to use her beak as her only means of defense. When she bit, she drew blood! Jeanne and I carefully removed her from her small, filthy cage, and put her in the fourth of our four adjacent cages and allowed her to become acclimatized to her new environment.

Shortly after we brought her home with us on 8/24/2002, and put her in the last cage, our Darcey saw her and began trying to feed her. Very soon, she began to accept his attentions, and he became her mate and her protector. They could not mate, because she could not withstand the weight of Darcey on her back. For several years, she would bite our fingers if we tried to pick her up, but finally she began to trust us. She used her beak as a "third leg" in order to climb the inside and the outside walls of her cage. She quickly became one of my favorites.

When Darcey died on 5/28/2005, Carswell became her protector until she died on 10/19/2006. After we allayed her fears of again being mistreated and especially after our proving to her that we loved her and would take care of her, she became a very loving little bird. Jeanne and I were sorry to see her go! Carswell mourned her loss as well.

Miss Julie is a white bird with black markings, which do not show up. This Polaroid picture, and the one below, were taken on 10/19/2006, about 17 months before she died on 3/12/2008.

Both pictures were taken of her sitting on a pad on the top of our kitchen stove. No, the stove was NOT on!
