Foreword
It is interesting and very humbling to note that our birds, whom we have loved and have sometimes lost to death, have become so very interesting and important to our readers. There are many lessons to be learned from our birds. These are lessons which were cleverly disguised as opportunities to rescue, nurse, and love some of these birds whom were considered of little or no worth by pet store managers, avian breeders and by several individuals.
One such true and contemporary story revolves around our "Shy Guy," a cute little Peach-Cheeked Love Bird, and his lady friend, "Miss Azure," who is sitting on infertile eggs. The two cannot mate, because they are two different species of birds. She nests in the lower, back, right corner of their cage, and "Shy Guy" feeds her, protects her and covers her body with his wings and his chest to keep her warm! I cannot get close enough with my camera to take an exact picture without frightening "Shy Guy" and 'Miss Azure," so the picture at the top of this page is the best that I can produce. This is one of the many stories of our birds...
Because many of our birds whose stories we are telling have died, I will attempt so far as it is possbile to describe each bird and to assimilate or to reproduce as closely as possible, a picture of each deceased bird. I wil attempt this by downoading the pictures of one of our live birds and which pictures most closely resemble the plumage of the deceased bird under discussion. I have also commissioned a local artist and friend who will draw a picture of each deceased bird. Together, the drawing and/or the picture will serve to illustrate each bird.
That which started several years ago as a series of articles entitled, "Bird Stories," and Raising Birds" Chapters 1 and 2, and finally, "B.I.R.D.S." have now become the beginnings and bases for this book. And for this privilege, of sharing our birds' stories, Jeanne and I thank you!

Lehia
Hatched: 2008. Purchased: 4/18/2009. A Light Violet English Budgerigar with Light Gray Wings. Hen. Date of Death: N/A.
Jeanne bought this beautiful English Budgerigar from Mr. Carroll Myers at the Alamo Exhibition Bird Show in N.E. San Antonio. At first, Jeanne thought that the bird was a male, because of its aggressive manner, the narrow bones and the light blue cere. So Jeanne named the bird, "Lehi," after the Book of Mormon prophet, "Father Lehi."
But after awhile, it became apparent that "Lehi" was a female, so Jeanne renamed "Lehi" and instead called her "Lehia."
She wants to be the flock leader, since most English Budgerigar, American Budgie, and Parakeet flocks are matriarchal in nature, which means that there dominant female is the flock leader. But our flock already has a flock leader, so Lehia takes her frustration out on other birds. Wheneve Jeanne and I catch her pushing other birds out of her way or pecking them to force them to flee, she gets put into the "punishment cage."

Honey Bunny
Hatched:2004. Purchased: 9/26/2009. A handsome Green and Yellow English Budgerigar with a Yellow Head. Cock. Date of Death: N/A.
Jeanne bought this beautiful English Budgerigar from Mr. Carroll Myers at the Alamo Exhibition Bird Show in N.E. San Antonio.
Honey Bunny has this unusual habit of dropping his head down as though he were praying. He is a handsome and a gentle bird who keeps to himself and bothers no one.
Let me tell you how the name, "Honey Bunny" came to be... Shortly after we were married on 3/1/1994, my wife, Jeanne, started calling me by this name, a name which I hated! One night, I drove over to Wilford Hall Medical Center in S.W. San Antonio to visit Jeanne, a Registered Nurse, who worked in the Obstetric Ward. As I approached the Sign In Desk, Airman First Class Fortune, looked up and said, "Hi, 'Honey Bunny!'" The first thing which crossed my mind was that Jeanne had told everyone, or at least Airman Fortune, that Jeanne had nick-named me "Honey Bunny!" Jeanne swears to this day, that she has never told anyone that her nick-name for me is "Honey Bunny!" I believe her, but then...
Honey Bunny died in Jeanne's hands on 9/2/2010.

Lehi
Hatched: 2004. Purchased: 9/26/2009. A handsome English Budgerigar with a white head, a pastel blue chest and a white tail. Cock. Date of Death: N/A.
Jeanne bought this beautiful English Budgerigar from Mr. Carroll Myers at the Alamo Exhibition Bird Show in N.E. San Antonio. Jeanne finally bought a male English Budgerigar whom she could name "Lehi," after Father Lehi in The Book of Mormon.
He is almost the exact same color as our pretty "Lehia," the only observable difference is the color of their ceres, but they show absolutely no interest in one another! What a shame! Their babies could look like both of them, although it is indeed possible that their first generation could more closely resemble the grandparents on either or both sides. But I suppose that we will never know.
