I will attempt to take you through the steps as easily as I can...just remember, anyone can do genealogy. The first step is DESIRE...
1.) Go to the INTERNET EXPLORER icon and click on it.
2.) Type http://www.familyseach.org in the field directly below Yahoo Windows Internet Explored (where it says http://www.yahoo.com/
3.) Scroll down the page and look along the RIGHT SIDE, until you see DOWNLOAD PAF.
4.) Click on DOWNLOAD PAF and wait for PAF to completely download.
5.) Go to you DESKTOP and find the PAF icon on your desktop. It should say "PAF5" and show the portraits of 3 people in the background.
6.) DOUBLE-CLICK on the PAF5 icon. It will take to the the Personal Ancestoral File 5.2, which will quickly disappear.
7.) You will see blank fields. The top left field should be blue, and the other blank fields will be white.
Before I go any further, I would advise you to read my instructions carefully and then PLAY WITH THE SYSTEM! Make up ficticious names, dates, places of birth, dates of marriage, places of marriage, dates of death, places of death, burial dates and the like. GET COMFORTABLE WITH THE PROGRAMS. ENJOY WHAT YOU ARE DOING! Then and ONLY then, erase everything and begin your Genealogy journey! Please feel free to call Randy Faulk at (210) 681-4415 or if you cannot reach me in a reasonable amount of time, call Sister Marla Price at (210) 680-0308 any time except Monday nights, due to Family Home Evening.
8a.) If you are a male, you will begin filling in the blank blue field in the top left corner with YOUR information: (a.) Your given name, your full middle name and your LAST NAME between the two /'s. For example, Robert William /Smith/ would be the correct way to enter Robert William Smith's full name, (b.) Date of Birth as 19 Sep 1947, (c.) Karnes City, Karnes, Texas as the complete City of Birth. You always spell out the complete City, County, and State. Do NOT use abbreviations, such as TX, PA, CT, NY and the like.
8B.) If you are a married female, put your FULL MAIDEN NAME in the first blank white field directly befow the blue field in the left corner,
9.) Put in as much information as you can, so that you can come back later and research the missing information. If you only know the County and State, for example, Shillings, Kentucy, then put in what you know. If you only know a Given Name or a Surname, put it is as a "Marker." For example, E /Johnson/ if you do not know what the E stands for, but you know his Surname was Johnson.
10.) THIS IS PROBABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT ADVICE THAT I CAN GIVE YOU! If you make a mistake, do NOT DELETE THE NAME IN THE FIELD! If you DELETE the NAME, you may have deleted ALL of the LINKS which come AFTER the NAME that you DELETED! Go up to the 'EDIT" section at the top (under the words "Personal Ancestoral File") and click on "EDIT." You will see a window drop down. Look at the gray shaded words "Unlink Individual." Since the name you seek to "unlink" doesn't have any name (spouse) linked to it, you can not "unlink" it. Just put in ANY name in the "spouse" block and then go back to the "Edit" field. You should NOW be able to use the "Unlink Individual" to erase the name of the individual you wish to erase without erasing ALL of the names associated with that individual.
END OF LESSON ONE.
LESSON TWO WILL COMMENCE AFTER THE "POLL" AND THE "GUEST BOOK."
