Pet Stories

       A dog's purpose----- from a 6 year old

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a
ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's
owners, Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy,
Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were
       hoping for a miracle.
I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I
told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker,
and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for
the old dog in their home.
As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they
thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to
observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might
       learn something from the experience.
The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat
as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so
calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I
wondered if he understood what was going on.
Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.
The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition
without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together
for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud
about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than
human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly,
       piped up, "I know why."
Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his
mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more
       comforting explanation.
He said, "People are born so that they can learn how
to live a good life -- like loving everybody all the
time and being nice, right?" The six-year-old
continued, "Well, dogs already know how to do that, so
they don't have to stay as long."
Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak
       kindly.
Remember, if a dog [were]the teacher you would learn
       things like:
When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your
       face to be pure ecstasy.
       Take naps.
       Stretch before rising.
       Run, romp, and play daily.
Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.
On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady
       tree.
When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire
       body.
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
       Be loyal.
Never pretend to be something you're not.
If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close
       by and nuzzle them gently.
ENJOY EVERY MOMENT OF EVERY DAY!

"Buddy" and the Cat

Many years before Jeanne and I met again and married,
Jeanne had bought a dark gray parakeet which she
named "Buddy." She had bought the parakeet for $9.00 from
a local Wal-Mart in San Antonio. Jeanne allowed "Buddy" to
roam on the top and sides of her open cage, just as Jeanne's
mother had allowed her own parakeets to do when Jeanne was
younger and lived at home.

One day, by accident, Jeanne left the front door to her apartment
partly open when she went outside. A neighbor's cat sneaked
into Jeanne's apartment and tried to eat Jeanne's bird. Jeanne
rushed inside just in time to save her bird, "Buddy" had stuck her
wing into the cat's open mouth, so that the cat couldn't swallow.

Parakeets can die of fright and have a heart attack. Fortunately,
Jeanne is a nurse and kept "Buddy" from "seizing" which means a
"cardiac arrest," commonly known as a heart attack. Jeanne said
that "Buddy" didn't come out of her cage for weeks. When the
bird finally did come out of her cage, she would look for the cat!

"Buddy" lived a very long and useful life. She laid 8 eggs at the age
of 10 years and finally died at the age of 12. We have her great, great grand "children," the 5th generation from Jeanne's orginal "Buddy."

And Along Came "Audacity" A Parable.

Again, as we approach the Thanksgiving and Christmas Season,
I would like to share a very special and precious story with you.
This is a true story, and reflects the deep feelings with which my wife, Jeanne, and I regard our birds from whom we have learned many important lessons...

In September of 2007, my wife, Jeanne, and I bought four baby parakeets from a pet store in San Antonio.  One of these little birds had the curiosity to venture and the capacity to squeeze her tiny body through the bars of her cage. She was focused enough to wander across our living room floor to the cages where most of our flock dwelled.

We put her back into her cage, only to discover, a short time later, that she had again escaped, but to where, no one knew! After 2 hours of diligent searching, Jeanne found the baby bird inside a "horizontal" floor fan, which was running full speed. The little bird had crawled inside of the fan and was hanging onto the inside wall of the fan, and was only about an inch or two from the underside of the fan blade. We thought that it was rather audacious and "fool-hardy" for a bird to climb into a fan when that fan was running a full speed, hence, she more than earned her name, "Audacity!" We finally let the 4 baby birds out to join our flock a few weeks later.

And along came "Audacity!" In no time at all, "Audacity" took up with one of our elderly male parakeets, "Dana Brent,." who at 10 years of age is nearly blind. "Dana Brent" had recently lost his best friend, "Jared" who, also at 10 years of age, had recently died and had left "Dana Brent" blind, lost, and totally alone!

"Audacity" is absolutely mesmerized by "Dana Brent, and she "moons" into his eyes, like she is a young girl totally in love! She feeds him; she grooms him, and she follows him where ever he goes. She is his constant, adoring, life-long companion.

Maybe a lot of married couples, who think that their marriages are in trouble or are over, could take lessons from our "Audacity!" Sometimes, it takes total devotion and unconditional love on the part of one partner to regain the love and the trust of the other! Sometimes, it also takes patience...
